Sri Lanka has a rich culinary history and though it has evolved over time, the base of the food currently consumed by a majority of the population still remains true to its roots.
Historical records show that in the early 1200s the people of Sri Lanka mainly lived off of rice and other grains, pulses, beans, coconut oil, fruits, vegetables, milk products, fish, and other meats which were supplied by hunters. Sri Lanka cuisine is seasoned with turmeric, ginger, pepper, and other spices that were grown in the hill country. When visiting a traditional Sri Lankan house today, one will find an almost exact menu being prepared.
